Roger Sherman 

Creator and director of the film

Tour leader

Roger Sherman is a renowned documentary filmmaker. His films have won an Emmy, a Peabody, a James Beard Award and two Academy Award nominations. He is a producer, director, cinematographer, still photographer, author, and a founder of Florentine Films. His award winning film, In Search of Israeli Cuisine, on which this tour is based, is a portrait of the Israeli people told through food, conflict and all. The multiple James Beard Award winning chef Michael Solomonov was the film's chef/guide. It has been shown at over 160 film festivals and special screenings around the world and in theaters across the U.S. Watch it on Netflix. About Roger's film The Restaurateur, a portrait of Danny Meyer (Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe, The Modern, Shake Shack++), Kat Kinsman,writing for CNN’s Eatocracy, said "Beg, borrow as needed, but do yourself a favor and see Roger Sherman's doc." A food photographer, Roger's work has been published in Saveur, Budget Travel, Newsweek and many other publications.

Also on the trip is Dorothy Kalins, creator of Saveur magazine, and producer of three books by Michael Solomonov, including Zahav, which won the James Beard Best Cookbook Award, and Israeli Soul. She's also Roger's wife.
 

Orit Levy

Tour Guide

Orit was born and raised in Jerusalem. After spending years in different cities, she came back to settle there. Orit holds an MA from Hebrew University in Philosophy and she brings even this knowledge to her guiding.  After 15 years in the restaurant business as a manager and culinary consultant, Orit became a certified tour guide and now works to combine both of her loves- food and travel. A culinary tour with Orit is a double treat- you spend time with this amazing, knowledgable, warm woman and eat delicious food. What more could you need?  Orit uses food to tell the story and history of Israel- past and present.

Ros Roucher

Content Manager - Via Sabra

Ros joins the Shefa Team as the glue that binds the journey. Together with Shawna, Ros creates an itinerary out of the wide range of ideas in her arsenal and her immense experience in educational and experiential travel.  Ros holds a Masters of Jewish education from Hebrew Union College Rhea Hirsch School of Education and a BA from Brandeis University.  She has worked in a wide-range of Jewish community organizations in the U.S. and, since making aliyah in 2007, has been working in Israel travel.  The Shefa Journey trip is a labor of love for Ros as it allows her to tap into all of her interests and passions.
